LUANDA, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Visiting UN Special Envoy Olusegun Obasanjo said here on Friday the United Nations plans to establish a ceasefire zone in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to restore peace in the central African country.
Former Nigerian President Obasanjo told reporters after one-hour meeting with Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos that they both analyzed the possibility to establish a ceasefire zone in the DRC which "depends much on the will of the main fighters" and the need to open humanitarian corridors.
"There is a need to restore peace in that country and curb the degrading humanitarian situation," he said, explaining that this is the reason of his assignment by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as the representative to the DRC.
Obasanjo defended the need of monitoring international contacts aimed at restoring peace in that country. "In the framework of consultations with regional heads of state, I initially chose Angola for this purpose," he said.
According to the UN envoy, Angolan President Dos Santos had promised to collaborate for the efforts made by other statesmen in search for a lasting peace in the DRC.
Obasanjo said he had also presented to the Angolan president the results of the recently-ended meeting in Nairobi, Kenya focused on the DRC situation.
Angola and DRC are members of the Southern African Development Community, a regional organization that has standby forces that might be called to intervene in the DRC.
