BEIJING, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale jolted Haicheng City in northeast China's Liaoning Province at 6:53 a.m. (Beijing time) on Friday, according to the Chinese seismological agency.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Gushanchagou, 33km from the city center, at 40.6 degrees north latitude and 122.9 degrees east longitude, at a depth of about 10 km.
There was no immediate information about casualties or losses, according the provincial earthquake bureau.
The quake was also felt in the provincial capital Shenyang, 146km from the epicenter. A resident surnamed Zhang said she felt tremors at her home.
Haicheng is prone to earthquakes. A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck in approximately the same place in February 1975, killing 2,041 people.
However, those deaths accounted for only a tiny fraction of the total population, which was about 8.3 million people at the time. A forecast of an impending quake six hours ahead of the event, based on observation of natural anomalies, led to a large evacuation that saved many lives.
