¡¡BUCHAREST, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu assured visiting UEFA president Michel Platini on Thursday that Romania would be able to host the UEFA Cup finals in 2012 at the new National Stadium based in the capital city.
Oprescu said the municipal authorities were carefully watching the conduct of the construction works on the new stadium and said he had nothing to reproach the constructors so far.
"I had an informal meeting with Mr. Michel Platini and I told him we are very much concerned with building the National Stadium, so that we may have the chance to stage the UEFA Cup in Bucharest in 2012," he said, adding that "I have nothing to reproach the constructors so far."
The construction plans of the stadium have set a small number of parking lots, a little over 160, Oprescu said, adding he planned to propose the constructor to build more of them.
The Bucharest mayor added that the local authorities and sport officials had agreed to back the programmes for the development of an Olympic Centre and several sport complexes in the capital, since such sport complexes have been turned into real estate developments.
