KINSHASA, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- More than 10,000 refugees in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have fled into neighboring Uganda since the latest wave of clashes began late last month between the government army and Tutsi rebels, the UN humanitarian agency has said.
The Office of the Coordination for Humanitarian
Affairs (OCHA) said in Kinshasa on Wednesday that a considerable rise in the
displaced is estimated as a result of hostilities which resumed in August.
The OCHA registered 230,000 of the displaced by the
fighting in addition to those received by families in Kiwanja and Rutshuru.
There are still others moving from place to place unable to be located.
The displaced numbered 19,000 in Kiwanjia alone
before the recent fighting, the agency said.
Meanwhile, the office of the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that its installations are not enough
for the more than 10,000 displaced in 12 villages at the border areas between
Uganda and the DRC.
The UNHCR installations have been stretched to limit
in efforts to provide food, clean water, health service and sanitation.
