BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Ubuntu Linux will
launch its latest 8.10 version of its separate desktop and server operating
systems on Thursday, according to its commercial sponsor, the London-based
Canonical Ltd.
The key new feature on the Ubuntu 8.10 desktop ¡ª 3G
network support -- enables pervasive connectivity. "Ubuntu 8.10 lays the
groundwork for a radically different, more mobile, desktop computing
environment," said Jane Silber, chief operating officer and head of online
services at Canonical Ltd.
Also included is a new "guest" capability that allows
a user to lend his machine to another user to check e-mail and perform other
tasks without disturbing the existing programs or settings.
Users will also be able to install Ubuntu Linux on a
portable USB drive and save new data on it so they can carry the operating
system with them and use it on any machine. And the new version also owns
exciting multimedia functions.
The enhanced virtualization, systems management, and
new Java support in the updated 8.10 server edition, the third edition of the
Linux server, address the needs of the dynamic data center and cloud computing
scenarios, according to the company executives.
It is based on the Linux 2.6.27 Linux kernel and
includes many new features.
"Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition is a terrific milestone
that underlines the value in our twin track release strategy," Silber said in a
statement. "The server edition embraces cloud computing, virtualization, mail
server enhancements, Java development and deployment, as well as a range of
services to help system administrators and developers."
Both versions will be available on Oct. 30 for free
download on Ubuntu's website.
