LOS ANGELES, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Internet giant Yahoo
Inc. announced on Friday an at least 100 million U.S. dollar project to open a
new data center in the state of Nebraska.
It will take four years to finish the project which
is expected to create at least 100 jobs with a minimum average salary of 68,700
dollars annually, according to Yahoo.
Yahoo announced 10 percent or 15,000 layoffs earlier
this week in a bid to grapple with the economic downturn.
Earlier this year, Yahoo applied for the biggest
slate of state tax breaks available in Nebraska to help set up some operations
in the state, which included a customer service center in Omaha.
Yahoo to lay off at least 10% of workforce
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Internet giant Yahoo announced on Tuesday that it planned to lay off at least 10 percent of its workforce over the next few months as sales declined for the third consecutive quarter this year.
At least 1,500 employees will lose their jobs as part of Yahoo's cost-saving plan, which Yahoo hoped would reduce costs by 400 million U.S. dollars a year. Full story
Google, Yahoo delay ad partnership due to federal investigations
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Internet giants Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. have agreed to delay implementing an advertising partnership to give the United States' Department of Justice time to finish investigating the proposed deal, said the San Francisco Chronicle on Saturday.
The decision marks an abrupt turnaround for Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who had recently said that he planned to start supplying ads to Yahoo's search engine sometime in early October, even if federal regulators had yet to give their approval, according to the source. Full story
Yahoo challenges Google in mobile phone market
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Yahoo said on Thursday that it is looking to the quickly growing mobile phone market to catch up with rival Google in the online realm, it was reported on Thursday.
"We want to create and enable a mobile ecosystem for billions of users," said Marco Boerries, executive vice president of Yahoo's Connected Life division. "We're turning everyone that uses voice today into a mobile data user." Full story
Yahoo to announce more jobs cuts as

Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Yahoo is expected to announce more job cuts when it reports
third-quarter earnings next week, as Silicon Valley's Internet companies
scramble to streamline themselves to face a tough economy, sources said
Saturday.
The Internet portal giant is likely to lay off at least as
many employees as it did in January, when it fired 1,000 workers, according to
people familiar with the industry. Yahoo currently has about 14,300 employees.

Poll: 3 out of 4 Americans believe
country's economy in recession
WASHINGTON, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- About three-fourth Americans believe that their
country is going through economic recession now, according to a poll released on
Tuesday.
The survey conducted by CNN and the Opinion Research
Corporation from Oct. 17 to 19 found that 76 percent of the 1,058 respondents
believe the country's economy is in a recession, and about 40 percent think it
would descend into a depression within one year. Full story
