JAKARTA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Former top leader of the separatist Free Aceh Movement or GAM, Tengku Muhammad Hasan Tiro and other high profile ex-rebel leaders met with Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Friday evening, requesting all parties tobeef up and sustain peace in Aceh, ex-GAM-style prime minister Malik Mahmood said here.

Aceh rebels and Jakarta terminated their three-decade conflict that claimed over 15,000 lives by signing a peace accord in Helsinki, Finland in Aug. 2005 after the province was hit by a tsunami in Dec. 2004 that killed over 170,000 people.

Tiro is a founder of the separatist movement in the oil-and-gas rich province in the northern tip of Sumatra island and had led the insurgency for Aceh independence from Indonesia for 30 years from his exile in Stockholm, Sweden. Although both sides have ended their hostility, Tiro and other rebel leaders have yet to settle in their homeland, Aceh, which is led by Governor Irwandi Yusuf, a former rebel negotiator and a wing of the GAM movement.

Vice President Kalla is one of the architects of the peace in Aceh.

During the meeting Tiro was also accompanied by Muzakir Manaf, former rebel commander, and Zaini Abdullah, ex GAM-style foreign minister.

"After 30 years in conflict and the tsunami, it is time to build Aceh which has been in peace and it must be maintained and strengthened," Mahmood said after the meeting at the Kalla house.

Tiro arrived in Aceh on Oct. 11 for a two-week visit to his homeland.

Aceh gets a self-ruled government after the peace deal, in which it is allowed to have local political parties.

Minor violence has been rather frequent in Aceh recently, such as grenade terror-attacks.
