GUANGZHOU, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- A top official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Tuesday called for efforts to overcome obstacles to scientific development and to heighten public awareness of development requirements.

Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said that efforts should be made to get rid of the thinking that is inconsistent with the concept of scientific development and to promote the development of socialist culture during a tour of the southern Guangdong Province.

He called on the public to participate in building cultural services that could benefit urban and rural people.

During the tour, he laid a wreath at a statue of late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in Shenzhen.
