MEXICO CITY, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale hit Guatemala and Mexico's southeastern state of Chiapas on Thursday, inflicting no major damage or casualties, authorities said.
The Mexican National Seismological Service (SSN) said that the earthquake was registered at 2:45 p.m. local time (1945 GMT) and the epicenter was just off the Chiapas coast.
According to reports from Mexican Civil Protection and rescue teams, some building windows were shattered and houses slightly damaged when the earthquake struck in the coastal zone stretching from the city of Arriaga to the city of Tapachula, some 800 km southwest of Mexico City.
Civil Protection from Mexico City said the quake was also felt in the city but no damage was reported.
