UAE recognizes Kosovo's independence 2008-10-15 00:45:00   Print

ABU DHABI, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced on Tuesday that it has recognized Kosovo as an independent and sovereign state, the official Emirates News Agency reported.

The UAE government's decision to recognize Kosovo's independence was "in accordance with its firm support for the principle of the legitimate right of self-determination," the report said.

Kosovo, a southern Serbian province where 90 percent of its 2 million people are ethnic Albanians, unilaterally declared independence in February.

It has been recognized by more than 40 countries, but its independence is vehemently opposed by Serbia and Russia.
