Drug "financier" arrested in U.S.-Mexico joint operation

    BEIJING, Oct 13 (Xinuanet) -- A suspected "financier" for the notorious Gulf Cartel, one of Mexico's main drug trafficking syndicates, has been captured, according to media reports Monday.

    In the joint operation "Operation Project Reckoning," the U.S. and Mexican justice officials captued the cartel's financial officer Wenceslao Alvarez last Wednesday.

    He was seized along with four other suspects when they accompanied a soccer team belonging to the cartel to a game in Mexico City, the justice officials said.

    The suspects' hiding and whereabouts were determined through information exchanges between the two countries, officials added.

    Alvarez is suspected of "controlling the purchase, reception, transport anddistribution of marijuana and cocaine destined for the United States." 

  ¡¡He is also suspected of handling money laundering operations for the Gulf Cartel and La Familia, another drug cartel in eastern Michoacan state of Mexico.

    A total of 7.6 million dollars in assets belonging to Alvarez in Atlanta, Georgia, was seized on Sept. 16 in the joint operation, the added in a statement.
