CAIRO, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Egypt is ready to host a proposed meeting that groups the international Quartet for the Middle East, the Palestinians and Israelis if Cairo receives an official request, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit said Thursday.

Abul Gheit made the announcement following talks between Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and visiting Quartet Envoy to the Middle East Tony Blair, former British premier, the state MENA news agency reported.

During the talks with Mubarak, Blair offered a comprehensive report on the ongoing efforts and projects launched in the Palestinian territories to support the Palestinian economy, said Abul Gheit.

They discussed the development of the staggering Mideast peace process and the possible Quartet-Palestinian-Israeli meeting, said the top Egyptian diplomat.

Such a meeting was proposed during a recent UN General Assembly meeting in New York, but no exact date or venue was set, according to Abul Gheit.

Blair, who arrived in Cairo on Thursday for a two-day visit to Egypt, also held talks with Abul Gheit after meeting with Mubarak.

Voicing his appreciation to Blair's works to improve the Palestinian people's living conditions, Abul Gheit urged Blair to continue his efforts for the development of the Palestinian economy, Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki said in a statement.
