BEIRUT, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese Christian pro-Syrian leader Suleiman Franjieh said that it is unlikely that Syrian army would cross the borders into Lebanon because it would be considered an "occupation army," local An-Nahar daily reported Thursday.

    The Marada party leader Franjieh, in an interview to the local Orange TV Wednesday night, said that any such Syrian move into Lebanon would "embarrass Syria's allies" in Lebanon.

    Syria has deployed around 10,000 soldiers on its borders with Lebanon last month, and reinforces its military build up last week.

    On Wednesday, Syria reiterated that its deployment of extra troop on the border with Lebanon is a measure to combated smuggling and infiltration of saboteurs.

    "These measures aim to control the border, only from Syrian territories, and we have no other intentions," a Syrian official said.

    On Sept. 27, a car bomb exploded near a Shiite Shrine in Damascus killing 17 people, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad hinted that the car came from Lebanon, saying "northern Lebanon has become a base for extremists" and warned that it is posing a threat to Syrian security.
