KHARTOUM, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. envoy to Sudan Richard Williamson and Sudanese Presidential Assistant Nafie Ali Nafie methere on Wednesday to discuss the situation in the restive western Sudanese region of Darfur.
Spokesman of the Sudanese Foreign Ministry Ali al-Sadik told reporters after the meeting that his government assured the American delegation of its keenness on implementing all anti-crisis initiatives and improving the security and humanitarian situations in Darfur.
The Sudanese government had exerted efforts to assist the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in carrying out its peacekeeping tasks, al-Sadik said.
He pointed out that the U.S. envoy referred to the positive developments Darfur witnessed recently thanks to the efforts of the Sudanese government and its cooperation with the UN, AU and UNAMID.
Al-Sadik said that the Sudanese presidential assistant expressed appreciation to a U.S. initiative in maneuvering the Egyptian, Ethiopian and Rwandan troops into Darfur, hoping that all countries concerned would follow suit to ensure a sound hybrid peacekeeping operation.
The meeting also tackled the Sudanese-Chadian relations, saying that any positive developments with N'djamena would smooth away the situations in Darfur and eastern Chad, he added.
Al-Sadik said that the meeting also touched on the Sudanese-U.S. relations.
The U.S. envoy arrived in Khartoum on Tuesday on the first visit of a U.S. official to the African country, since Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir was accused in mid-July by a prosecutor of the International Criminal Courts (ICC) of war crimes committed in Darfur.
The Sudanese government refused to acknowledge the jurisdiction of the ICC on the ground of that Sudan had not signed the Rome Statute for the ICC's establishment.
