KABUL, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai has disclosed
that his administration wanted talks with Taliban through the mediation of Saudi
Arabia, an Afghan web site Quqnoos reported on Wednesday.
"Since two years I have been sending letters and messages to the Saudi
Arabian king and requested him, as a world Muslim leader, to help us bring peace
in Afghanistan," Quqnoos quoted the president as saying.
The web site added that the Afghan president admitted Tuesday on the
occasion of the first day of Eidul Fitr to mark the end of the fasting month of
Ramadan that the preparation for negotiations is going on a daily basis.
"Our envoys traveled many times to Saudi Arabia and to Pakistan, but the
discussions have not started yet. We hope that it happens soon," he said.
He made this admission after a British newspaper the Observer revealed
Sunday that talks between Taliban and Afghan government with the support of
Britain was going on.
However, Afghan foreign minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta in talks with the
press on Monday said that no official contacts had been established with
militants.
Taliban chief Mullah Mohammad Omar who in the past linked any talks with
Afghan government on his message on the eve of Eidul Fitr once again ruled out
any talks with the concernment, adding no talks will be with the government in
the presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan.
