BEIRUT, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese Christian Maronite Church Patriarch Nasrallah Sfier has expressed the hope that Lebanon's Christian leaders would reach reconciliation, local Naharnet website reported Wednesday.

Sfier made the remarks after a surprise visit Tuesday to Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, a Maronite Christian and former army chief.

"Christians should sit together because other sects have achieved reconciliation," Sfier told reporters, adding that "we will not give up efforts to reach Christian reconciliation."

However, Sfier said "agreement among all Lebanese is impossible."

The patriarch said that he had undertaken several initiatives in the past, "but when we reach a vital point, everybody disavowed." The Maronite patriarch could not get Maronite Christian leaders, who have been at odds, to meet together for reconciliation.

Lebanese rival sects have been carrying out reconciliations to cease sectarian fighting, which rocked the country in the summer.

In early September, Sunni government supporters signed a reconciliation document with opposition Alawite, which calls for elimination of all armed actions in the north, compensation for damaged properties and commitment to refraining from all forms of violence.

Late September, a Shiite Hezbollah delegation visited Sunni majority leader Saad Hariri in preparation for a meeting between Hariri and Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah.
