JAKARTA, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- More than 200,000 Indonesian people, including
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Vice President JusufKalla, and the United
Indonesia cabinet ministers, took part in morning prayer on Wednesday before
celebrating the end of the month-long Ramadan fasting month to mark the Idul
Fitri Islamic holiday.
Mosques in Jakarta and surrounding areas were packed with people performing
prayer in peace to mark the end of fasting month. They will then visit friends
and relatives to follow the Idul Fitri tradition of seeking forgiveness for
their past misdeeds.
Security around the mosques was tightened as dozens of police and military
personnel were seen on guard outside the mosque yard while the presidential
security guards (Paspampres) ensure the security inside.
Meanwhile, Millions of people in other cities and villages in the world's
largest Muslim nation were also peacefully celebrating the Islamic holiday with
family and friends, Antara news agency reported.
Idul Fitri falls at the beginning of the month of Syawal, ending the
Ramadan fasting month.
The minister of religious affair, Maftuh Basyuni, on his preach after the
Ied pray in Istiqlal mosque, said that the spirit of ramadhan would make
Indonesia a more developed nation.
If the spirit were kept in the hearts of every Moslem in Indonesia, then
this country's social, economy, and politic life would move on into the line of
piety, said the minister.
