UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier
Wen Jiabao arrived in New York Tuesday to attend meetings at the headquarters of
the United Nations.
During his three-day stay here, Wen will attend a
high-level UN meeting for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Thursday and
the general debate of the 63rd UN General Assembly Wednesday. He will address
the two meetings to further outline China's development objectives.
Representatives from some 150 countries, including
more than 90 heads of state or government, are expected to attend the MDGs
summit, which will be convened by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon with the aim
to generate further actions to realize the MDGs by 2015.
The summit will be the first of its kind on the MDGs
since 2000,when world leaders committed themselves to the goals laid out in the
Millennium Declaration.
The premier is also expected to meet world leaders,
the UN secretary-general, overseas Chinese and foreign media during his stay in
New York City.
BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese Ministry of
Commerce (MOC) official said here on Friday that although China is still a
developing country, it would continue to make contributions according to its own
capabilities to help reduce global poverty.
"China is still a developing country. Its GDP per
capita will remain low for a very long time," said Gao Yuanyuan, the ministry's
foreign aid department deputy head, at a press conference prior to the United
Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG) summit to open in New York on Sept.
