COLOMBO, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Dingiri Banda Wijetunga, a former Sri Lankan President, has passed away Sunday morning, sources at the main hospital in the central town of Kandy said.
Dingiri Banda Wijetunga, 91, was ailing for sometime. He was appointed as the island's third executive President in May 1993 with the assassination of his predecessor Ranasinghe Premadasa by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber.
He held the position until November 1994 before bowing out from the position of the leader of United National Party (UNP), the country's oldest political party.
He held a number of senior positions including the post of Prime Minister between 1989 and 1993. He is survived by his daughter as his wife pre-deceased him.
