BRUSSELS, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Media in the Netherlands on Wednesday praised the closing ceremony of the Beijing Paralympics and the organization, according to news reaching here.
"These are the greatest Paralympic Games ever," International Paralympic Committee President Philip Craven was quoted as saying by an article posted on the website of De Telegraaf, a major daily in the Netherlands.
Calling the closing ceremony "a grandiose show," the article noted that some 91,000 spectators were present at the Bird's Nest, China's national stadium, for the event.
The Beijing Paralympics "attracted a total of 1.29 million paying spectators," outnumbering the 890,000 tickets sold in Athens four years ago, commented the article.
In a story titled "Paralympic President: Best Games Ever" posted on the website of Radio Netherlands Worldwide, the author said Chinese President Hu Jintao hoped the "Paralympics would lead to an improvement in the welfare of disabled people in China."
Some Dutch media praised China's efforts to improve the welfare of the disabled, and noted such related facts as that some tourist attractions like the Forbidden City and a number of shopping malls are made easily accessible for people on the wheelchair, and the modern subway is equipped with elevators for the convenience of the disabled.
