BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- China has already set up more than 2,500 legal aid centers so far to help the disabled safeguard their rights, according to the China Disabled Persons' Federation on Sunday.

    A total of 2,677 legal aid centers for the handicapped were established and had helped the disabled deal with more than 20,000cases by 2007, according to the statistics of the Federation, which was posted on its website.

    China has made strenuous efforts to protect the interests of the disabled by both offering legal aid and carrying out random checks on the implementation of the Law on Safeguarding the Legal Rights of the Disabled, source with the Federation said.

    In 2007, more than 1,300 checks at or above county level were carried out in the country to monitor the enforcement of the Law. Advisory bodies at various levels also made nearly 1,200 tours to inspect and study how the law was received in grassroots.

    The Law on Safeguarding the Legal Rights of the Disabled, which was approved by China's top legislature in Dec. 1990, touches issues on the education, social security and legal responsibility of the disabled. An amendment to the law was made in April this year.
