ABU DHABI, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Largest Omani mobile operator Oman Mobile joined the international campaign to fight mobile spam by signing the Code of Practice on Mobile Spam, an initiative of the GSM Association (GSMA) and its member operators, local Oman Daily Observer reported Sunday.
By signing this code, Oman Mobile is committed to the protection of a secure and trusted environment of mobile services and to ensure customers receive minimal amounts of spam sent via SMS (short message service) and MMS (multimedia message service), the report said.
"This code is a proactive approach to collectively deal with mobile spam through set initiatives and recommendations, as well as cooperating with other mobile operators to share information and adopt measures that track the source of spam and minimize it continuously," the company's systems planning specialist Ahmed Al Qurri was quoted as saying.
Under the code, mobile operators commit to including anti-spam conditions in all new contracts, establish a mechanism that ensures appropriate customer consent, work cooperatively with other mobile operators, undertake additional anti-spam activities, and encourage support from the government and regulators.
Oman Mobile, a subsidiary of the country's telecom giant Omantel, currently owns a customer base of 1.6 million and holds are venue market share of 75 percent.
Founded in 1987, GSMA is a global trade association representing more than 750 GSM mobile phone operators across 218 countries and regions of the world.
