YANGON, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar Disabled Sports Federation (MDSF) has expected to get medal in the ongoing Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, local weekly Myanmar Times reported on Monday.

    The disabled athletes who were taking part in the Paralympics have been in training since June and the MDSF is hopeful they will be able to bring back a medal, said the weekly quoting vice president of the MDSF.

    Myanmar para sports contingent, which failed to attend the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games four years ago, comprised of president of the MDSF, three coaches and three male athletes.

    They will compete in two sports of track and field and swimming in the Beijing Games scheduled on Sept. 6-17, participated by a record 4,000-plus athletes from 147 countries and regions, 10 times the figure at the Games' debut in Rome 1960.

    Win Naing will compete in javelin event, Win Sann Aung in 100-meter breaststroke and Naing Sit Aung in 100-meter backstroke and 50-meter butterfly events.

    Naing Sit Aung and Win Naing grabbed three gold medals each for the country in the last 4th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Para Games in Thailand in January this year, participated by 11 countries. Naing Sit Aung won in men's 200-meter freestyle, men's 50- and 100-meters backstroke in the swimming event, and Win Naing in the men's shot put, discus and javelin in the track and field event.

    The 34-athlete Myanmar para sports delegation competed in three sport events -- track and field, swimming and table tennis -- in the 4th ASEAN Para Games, pocketed 12 golds, 11 silvers and 12 bronzes, ranking sixth behind Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines among 10 ASEAN countries and Timor Leste.

    Myanmar got seven golds, eight silvers and bronzes each in track and field, five golds, three silvers and bronzes each in swimming and one bronze in table tennis events.

    Meanwhile, six Myanmar athletes took part in five sports of track and field, swimming, archery, rowing and canoeing/kayak in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, last month.
