TBILISI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The flagship of the U.S. navy's Sixth Fleet, the USS Mount Whitney, arrived
at Georgia's Black Seaport of Poti Friday with U.S. humanitarian aid to Georgia,
news reports said.
The ship will deliver more than 17 tons of relief supplies, including blankets, juices, powdered milk and hygiene products, the U.S. embassy in Tbilisi said.
The USS Mount Whitney, a sophisticated command warship based in Italy, is the third U.S. vessel transporting humanitarian aid to Georgia after its military conflict with Russia.
The two previous vessels -- the USS McFaul and U.S. Coast Guard cutter Dallas -- had come and gone bringing relief supplies. They anchored off Batumi, another Black Sea port south of Poti.
Russia, whose warships and forces are also deployed near the port, said earlier that it did not plan any military response to the increased presence of U.S. ships in the sea.
The United States has provided nearly 30 million dollars in aid to Georgia since its recent conflict with Russia, including 1,200 tons of food and other relief supplies, according to the White House.
The USS Mount Whitney's arrival, coupled with an additional 1- billion-U.S.-dollar aid package to Georgia announced two days earlier, came more than three weeks after its conflict with Russia over a breakaway region of Georgia ended with a ceasefire agreement brokered by France.
A day earlier, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney visited Tbilisi to extend U.S. support to the Caucasus nation.
