BEIRUT, Sep. 4 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese Sunni majority leader MP Saad Hariri,
addressing guests of an Iftar banquet at his residence in Beirut, said he
supports reconciliation between Sunnis and Alawites in the northern city of
Tripoli, As-Safir daily reported Thursday.
Hariri said he is ready to meet "any Sunni or Alawite personality from
Tripoli to accomplish this reconciliation."
The northern neighborhoods of Pro-government Sunnis in Bab Tannaneh, and
opposition backed Alawites in Baal Mohsin, fought fierce battles during the past
three months, leaving more than 23 people killed, and over hundred others
wounded.
"We have no problem with the Alawites," Hariri said, pointing out that the
violence in the north broke out after Hezbollah's attack in Beirut during the
month of May.
Then the Hezbollah Shiite opposition and pro-government Sunni supporters
were engaged in fierce clashes in Beirut during the second week of May.
The clashes ended after Lebanese leaders signed Doha accord in Qatar on May
21, prohibiting the use of arms to settle political differences.
"Repeating the May 7 attacks would lead to serious catastrophe to all,"
Hariri added.
