GENEVA, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Swiss government on Wednesday called for a political solution to the conflict in Georgia in accord with international principles.
Both Georgia's right to sovereignty and the democratic will of the people in South Ossetia and Abkhazia have to be respected, a government spokesman was quoted as saying by the Swissinfo news website.
South Ossetia and Abkhazia are two breakaway regions of Georgia. Russia recognized their independence last week.
"Switzerland regrets that a solution has not yet been found that meets the United Nations Charter, the Helsinki Accords and the Charter of Paris," the spokesman said.
The spokesman also called on Russia and Georgia to fully implement the terms of the Aug. 12 cease-fire agreement.
He also called for access to humanitarian support for the thousands who were forced to flee the fighting and said they should be allowed to return to their homes soon.
According to the spokesman, the Swiss government has not discussed the issue of independence for either South Ossetia or Abkhazia. ¡¡
