BRUSSELS, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Dutch Paralympic team aims to finish in
the top 25 on the national medal table, the Netherlands' National Paralympic
Committee (NPC) told Xinhua Wednesday.
Eighty Dutch athletes -- 33 men and 47 women -- will compete in 13
disciplines at the 13th Paralympic Games in Beijing which commences on Saturday,
Lieske Libregts, the spokesperson for the Dutch Paralympic team, told Xinhua by
email.
They will fight for medals in cycling, rowing, wheelchair tennis,
wheelchair basketball, football 7 side, archery, judo, athletics, swimming,
sailing, equestrian, table tennis and sitting volleyball, Libregts said.
The Netherlands hopes to win six gold medals in Beijing, she said.
Medal hopefuls include wheeler Kenny van Weeghel, who took gold in 400
meters (T54) at the Athens Paralympics, and Wheelchair tennis supremo Esther
Vergeer, who won four golds in women's tennis in the two previous Paralympics.
The Dutch team also have high hopes for the players in sitting volleyball,
judo and table tennis.
Libregts, who is now in Beijing, praised the Chinese hosts for providing
"perfect" conditions for the Paralympians in the athletes village. "Very, very
good," she said.
The first Dutch athletes, the swimmers, arrived at Beijing last Saturday
after having a training camp in Chuncheon, South Korea. There are Dutch athletes
arriving every day in the village, she said.
The Netherlands has participated in all the Paralympics since it started in
1960. The country was usually ranked between 10th and 15th on the medal table,
Libregts said.
The country finished 15th at the Sydney Paralympics with 30 medals
including 12 gold. However, it fell to 27th in Athens with 29 medals including
five gold.
About 4,000 athletes from 150 national Paralympic committees will compete
in 21 disciplines at the Paralympics in Beijing.
