Brazil's industrial production grows 1 percent in July

    RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's industrial production grew 1 percent in July as compared with June and 8.5 percent year-on-year, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) said Tuesday.

    It is the 25th consecutive month that Brazil's industry has registered a positive growth, said the IBGE.

    The biggest growth in July took place in the tobacco industry with a 12.9 percent increase, followed by the printing and publishing industry with 5.6 percent, the chemical industry 4.2 percent increase, and the machinery and equipments industry 2 percent.

    Though most industrial sectors in Brazil enjoyed production increases in July, the electronics industry decreased by 7.6 percent, and the automobile industry and beverage industry were down 1.2 percent and 3 percent, respectively.

    The production of non-durable goods remained stable from June to July, while the production of durable goods had a decrease of 5.2 percent in July. Intermediate goods and capital goods industry had 1.1 percent and 1.2 percent increases.

    According to official statistics, Brazil's industry grew 6.6 percent in the first seven months, while in the period ranging from August 2007 to July 2008, the accumulated growth reached 6.8 percent.
