MEXICO CITY, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Gustav has killed at least 59 people and injured 22 others in Haiti, Haitian authorities said Thursday.
Seven people were missing since the storm pounded the Caribbean nation Tuesday, civil protection director Alta Jean-Baptiste told a news conference, according to reports from Port-au-Prince.
Flooding caused by heavy rains inundated farmland, houses and highways, she said, adding that most of the victims were killed in floods and mudslides.
In the neighboring Dominican Republic, local authorities said Gustav claimed eight lives, including six children.
At midday Thursday, Gustav's center was located some 20 km to the east of Punta Morante, at the eastern tip of Jamaica and 275 km southeast of Cabo Cruz in the Cuban province of Granma.
Meanwhile, the eighth tropical storm Hanna, located some 490 km northeast of the West Indies, is moving to the east-northwest at 19 km per hour with sustained maximum winds of 65 km per hour.
