ISLAMABAD, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on
Thursday accepted the nomination papers for presidential candidates after
scrutiny, receiving no challenge from their rivals.
The final list of presidential candidates would be issued on Aug. 30, and
the presidential election is scheduled on Sept. 6, with Pakistan People's Party
(PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari asa strong competitor for the top post.
The election is a number game and the PPP has the necessary numbers to win
the presidential election, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry
Rehman told media on Thursday.
Zardari, widower of assassinated former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, will
be competing with former Chief Justice Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddiqui from the Pakistan
Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Mushahid Hussain from Pakistan Muslim
League-Quaid (PML-Q).
The PML-N nominated Siddiqui as candidate after its party chief Nawaz
Sharif quit the coalition and sat on opposition bench on Monday.
The electoral college for the presidential election includes the four
provincial assemblies, National Assembly and the Senate.
