KABUL, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- People of Afghanistan on Thursday accorded a red
carpet welcome to the first Afghan Olympia medalist Rohullah Nikpai upon his
arrival from Beijing, China.
All the roads leading to the Kabul international airport were decorated
with the pictures and billboards of Nikpai inscribed with the word
"Congratulation to all Afghans".
Amid tight security the first Afghan Olympia's medalist was driven to Kabul
Sport Stadium where a bulk of people waiting to receive him were chanting
slogans such as "Nikpai, the pride of Afghanistan", "Long live Afghanistan".
Nikpai, 20 was among the Afghan athletes bagged Bronze after defeating his
rivals from Britain, Germany and Spain in Taekwondo at Beijing Olympic Games in
mid this month.
At the Kabul Sport Stadium, Afghan Second Vice President Mohammad Karim
Khalili in his speech felicitated Nikpai's victory to the people and the
government of Afghanistan.
"It is a matter of pride for all of us, for the government and the people
of Afghanistan that this war-ravaged country was able to win medal at Beijing
Olympic Games 2008," Khalili noted.
President Hamid Karzai has already given a residential house to the first
Afghan Olympia's medalist while numerous Afghan companies have welcomed him by
awarding cash prizes and "zero meter" cars.
