BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Rap music mogul Marion "Suge" Knight was arrested  Wednesday on assault and drug charges in Las Vegas.

Knight, 43, the founder of bankrupt Death Row Records was accused of punching his girlfriend while brandishing a knife at her during an argument about 6:40 a.m. on a busy street.

He was then taken into custody after the police received a domestic violence call, Las Vegas police said.

"He did not stab her," said Officer Jacinto Rivera, a department spokesman, adding Knight would be held at the Clark County jail for at least 12 hours on the domestic violence charge.

"The victim purposely grabbed the steering wheel and caused the vehicle to hit the curb," said Rivera.

The woman tried to escape, but Knight caught her, Rivera added.

Knight also was charged with two drug offenses when he was found to be in possession of ecstasy and the prescription narcotic Hydrocodone at the time of his arrest.

The name of the woman has not yet been released, however she is, as U.S. media reported, Knight's girlfriend of three years.

She was transported to Spring Valley Hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries.

Knight has been booked on felony charges of assault with deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor charges of possession of dangerous drugs without a prescription and domestic violence.

Knight has a history of legal problems. He was convicted of assault in 1992 and placed on probation, then jailed for five years in 1996 for violating that probation.

He was returned to jail in 2003 for again violating parole for punching a parking attendant. Knight was wounded during a shooting at a party in a Miami nightclub in August 2005.
