CAIRO, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- A leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement said Tuesday his faction supports the Egyptian mediation efforts to reach a Palestinian consensus for the resumption of the inter-Palestinian dialogue.

In an interview with the Egyptian MENA news agency, Nafez Azzam stressed the importance of Egypt's role and its heavyweight influence at the regional and international levels.

Azzam, a member of the Jihad delegation arriving in Cairo on Monday for Palestinian reconciliation talks, called on Egypt to discuss with all Palestinian factions on the causes of the current inter-Palestinian rift.

On Monday, Egyptian officials held talks with the visiting Islamic Jihad delegation, starting a series of bilateral talks with Palestinian factions in a bid to hammer out a unified stance among Palestinians to overcome the current inter-Palestinian crisis.

Following the bilateral meetings, Egypt will then oversee a comprehensive Palestinian dialogue to help the Palestinians get out of the current crisis and rifts among rival movements.

In the past months, Egypt has been trying to broker a Palestinian reconciliation after it succeeded in brokering a ceasefire in June between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement which rules Gaza.
