Downpours brought by Typhoon Nuri swept south China's Guangdong and Guangxi from
Friday to Saturday, but no casualties have been reported.

From 8 a.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Saturday, rainstorms
accompanied by winds of up to 68 km per hour, hit the southeastern areas of
Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, with the biggest precipitation of 350 mm in
Beiliu County, according to the regional meteorological station.
Heavy rain was forecast to continue in the region on
Sunday and Monday.
Typhoon Nuri was downgraded to a
strong tropical storm on Friday afternoon after it landed in the coastal areas
along Sai Kung of Hong Kong. The storm made another landfall in southern
Guangdong late on Friday, packing winds of up to 90
km per hour.

In a farming yard in Guangzhou, Guangdong's capital,
186 tourists, including 55 foreigners, were evacuated to safe areas by police
after the wooden house where they stayed were damaged by strong winds with power
cut off.
Typhoon Nuri forces 160,000 to
evacuate
BEIJING, Aug. 23 -- Nearly 160,000 people in 13
coastal cities in Guangdong were evacuated Friday after Typhoon Nuri, the
strongest this year, hit the southern province.
The provincial observatory issued a Class-I warning -
the highest level - before the tropical cyclone landed in Hong Kong at 5 pm
Friday, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall. But it inflicted little

Tropical storm Nuri makes landfall in
China's Guangdong
GUANGZHOU, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Nuri
made landfall in Nanlang Town, Zhongshan City, of the southern Guangdong
Province at 10:10 p.m. on Friday, packing winds of up to force-10, or 90 km per
hour.
Typhoon Nuri was downgraded to a strong tropical
storm, the 12th this year, at 4:55 p.m. on Friday after it landed in the coastal
areas along Sai Kung of Hong Kong, according to the provincial meteorological

China's Guangdong on highest alert as
Typhoon Nuri approaches
GUANGZHOU, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- South China's Guangdong
Province on Friday initiated a Class-I response to Typhoon Nuri, the 12th
tropical storm this year.
The provincial observatory said the eye of the storm was
in the South China Sea about 180 km from Shenzhen as of 8 a.m. on Friday,

Flights canceled in S China as Typhoon
Nuri approaches
GUANGZHOU, Aug.
22 (Xinhua) -- Eighty-six flights going to south China's coastal Shenzhen City
and Hong Kong were canceled as Typhoon Nuri approached, a major carrier said on
Friday.
In total, 18 flights heading to Hong Kong were canceled
after 10 a.m. and 68 flights expected to arrive in Shenzhen after 3 p.m. were
also canceled, a China Southern Airline official said. Full story
Traffic suspended as Typhoon Nuri
edges closer to Macao
MACAO, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Macao Meteorological and
Geophysical Bureau (SMG) hoisted the gale signal No. 8 at 12:30 p.m. local time
on Friday as Typhoon Nuri gathered speed and moved closer to Macao.
The SMG confirmed that by 2:00 p.m. local time, Nuri was
90 km east off the coast of Macao, and was sweeping northwest at a speed of 15
km per hour toward Hong Kong. Full story

Kong, halting industries
HONG KONG, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Observatory
issued the No. 8 Northwest Gale or Storm Signal Friday morning as Typhoon Nuri
edging close to the southern Chinese city.
According to the Hong Kong Observatory, at 9 a.m. (010
GMT) Friday, Nuri was centered about 150 kilometers southeast of Hong Kong near
21.5 degrees north latitude and 113.8 degrees east longitude. Full story
