YANGON, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Farmers in some flood-hit areas in Myanmar have resumed cultivation as the water has receded there, the official newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported Wednesday.

    Over the past week, torrential rain had caused flood in some areas of Myanmar, prompting local residents to evacuate and close down schools temporarily in the affected areas.

    According to the report, some areas in Tanintharyi, Sagaing, Bago, Mandalay, Yangon and Ayeyawaddy divisions, and Kayin, Mon and eastern Shan states were affected with some houses and monsoon paddy fields under water.

    The flood also caused damage to some road sections.

    The landslide in Mogok has reportedly killed five family members and a guest when their house was buried in the mishap.

    Other earlier reports said border trade activities in Myanmar-Thai border have been temporarily suspended as transport link was disrupted due to landslide.

    The landslide, which occurred at a location between Myawaddy and Pha-an in southeastern Kayin state, has prevented commodities flow from Thailand's Maesai into Myanmar's border towns.

    Meanwhile, heavy flood near Myanmar's Shan state also put Tachilek market on the Myanmar side and the Maesai market on the Thai side under water, the report said.

    According to the report, Mekong River water level in the triangle area where Myanmar, Thailand and Laos meet reached the maximum level in 30 years.

    Local people inhabiting in the coastal regions and the regions on the banks of Thanlwin, Sittaung, Chindwin, Ayeyawaddy, Myitngw and Bago rivers are exercising constant watch and are in a state of preparedness against more possible flood triggered by swollen rivers.
