Latvian president congratulates weightlifter on bagging bronze medal in Olympics

RIGA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Latvian President Valdis Zatlers Tuesday congratulated weightlifter Viktors Scerbatihs on bagging a bronze medal for the country in the over-105kg contest in the ongoing Beijing Olympic Games.

Zatlers expressed gratitude to Scerbatihs via phone for his wonderful performance, which brought "happiness and pride" to the country.

The president also wished Scerbatihs, a parliamentarian from the country's Green Party, further achievements in his sports career.

Meanwhile, Latvian Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis, who is currently in Beijing for the Olympics, also sent congratulations to Scerbatihs, the national news agency LETA reported.

The bronze medal won by Scerbatihs is the first medal the Latvian delegation has garnered in the Beijing Games. Enditem
