BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Fourth seeds Roger Federer and fellow-Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka beat Swedes Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson 3-1 in the men's doubles final on Saturday.
Federer/Wawrinka, who have only played their fourth tournament together, needed two hours and 48 minutes to beat the Swedes in their first-ever meeting 6-3, 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3.
The gold came as a great compensation for the singles world number one Federer, who had aimed to claim the gold in men's singles, only to be sent packing by American James Blake in the quarterfinals.
It was also Switzerland's second Olympic tennis medal, with Marc Rosset winning the men's singles gold medal at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games.
"It is like a fantastic dream comes true, I feel really happy to win the gold medal, especially as we were both a bit down after losing in the singles. It's incredible that we managed to stay on track to win in doubles," said Federer in the mixed zone.
"A magical moment. Something incredible in my career, and I enjoy that. I have tried for several times (to get a medal), and I came really close to the medal in Sydney where I finished fourth.
"Since then I can't stop thinking that If I am the best player in the world, I should do the same in the Olympics, and then finally I made it, it is really special also because it is for Switzerland, you know, our country can not get so many medals at one Olympics, maybe one or two, but this time I got a gold medal, it is for my country, I really feel different, it is for my country, and it is different from the Grand Sam where I did it for just myself."
In an earlier match, the American twin brothers and top seeds Bob and Mike Bryan rallied to beat Frenchmen Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to get a bronze medal for the United States.
In women's doubles, Serena and Venus Williams and Anabel Medina Garricues/Virginia Ruano Pascual from Spain will contest for the gold medal on Sunday after winning their semifinals on Saturday.
The American sisters will be aming for a second gold medal in this event -- they won it in Sydney in 2000 -- after their 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over another pair of sisters, Alona and Kateryna Bondarenko from Ukraine.
The Bondarenko sisters held on to their early break to win the first set and came back from a break down in the second before the Williams sisters took five games in a row to assume control and set a course for victory.
While Medina Garricues/Ruano Pascual ended Chinese hopes of tennis gold when they defeated Yan Zi and Zheng Jie 6-4, 7-6(5).
The Spanish duo secured the only break of the match in the seventh game of the first set and held firm in the second set to prevail in the tiebreak.
"We've tried our best. It was a pity we didn't capitalise on those chances in the second set. We are very grateful to those Chinese spectators who have been supporting us from the very first match till the semifinal," said Zheng, the 2006 Australian Open and Wimbledon doubles winner with her long-time partner Yan.
"We have played Medina Garricues/Ruano Pascual before and we were prepared for it, but we were hasty and lost the big points."
Ruano Pascual played in the women's doubles final with Conchita Martinez in Athens in 2004, losing to Li Ting and Sun Tiantian from China.
"We played against the Williams at Wimbledon this year," the Spaniard said of Sunday's final. "I told Anabel (Medina Garricues) that that was good even though we lost there because we knew that if we play against them again here we would have less respect for them."
Spain has never won an Olympic gold medal in tennis but has two chances to do so on Sunday as Rafael Nadal will contest the men's singles final against Chilean Fernando Gonzalez.
Earlier, China's Li Na lost to Russian sixth seed Dinara Safina 7-6(3), 7-5 in the women's singles semifinals. The Russians have wrapped up gold and silver medals of the event as Safina will in the final take on compatriot Elena Dementieva, who thrashed another Russian Vera Zvonareva in the other semifinal.
"Li is a great player, but today maybe I was a little bit more lucky. It was like a 50 to 50 match, and she had many chances that she didn't take it. I took my chances. The score is 7-6, 7-5. It was very close. It was very fragile in this match," said Safina.
Li, the former top 20 player, made 69 unforced errors to Safina's 36.
"Last year she doesn't play for six months. This year she started the season unbelievable, but she was again unlucky. If she had been playing consistent for one year, you will see her in top 15," said Safina, who is making her Olympics debut in Beijing.
In the men's singles bronze medal match, third seed Novak Djokovic from Serbia beat American Blake 6-3, 7 -6(4).
