BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- "Today was my day, and it came out well," said Brazilian sprinter Cesar Cielo Filho after winning the 50m freestyle race gold here on Saturday.
Filho upset huge favorites to win the first Olympic swimming gold medal for his country with an Olympic record of 21.30 seconds.
"I'd like to thank God and I will continue to struggle and work hard," he said.
"My dream was to be an Olympic champion and that is now realized," he added. Cielo was group-hugged by his teammates who rejoiced at the rare gold medal.
France's Amaury Leveaux took silver with 21.45 and compatriot Alain Bernard, the 100 meters freestyle gold medalist, took bronze with 21.49.
Australian Eamon Sullivan, the world record holder, finished sixth.
