China's disciplinary authorities send officials to quake zone to help with reconstruction

Special report: Reconstruction After Earthquake

    BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's top disciplinary authorities dispatched 10 officials to the earthquake-ravaged Sichuan Province to help with post-quake reconstruction on Thursday.

    They would temporarily serve as officials in local agencies of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Ministry of Supervision, according to Huang Shuxian, the CCDI deputy secretary.

    He Guoqiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the CCDI, said the move would strengthen disciplinary and supervision work at local level and offer a good opportunity for the training of young cadres.     

China to increase financial supports for post-quake reconstruction 


    BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's authorities on Wednesday published a guideline for the country's financial institutions, calling for more financial supports and services for the post-quake reconstruction.

    The guideline was jointly published by the People's Bank of China, China Banking Regulatory Commission, China Securities Regulatory Commission and China Insurance Regulatory Commission. Full story

    BEIJING/CHENGDU, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Olympic host China on Tuesday announced the complete resettlement of up to 10 million survivors of the calamitous May 12 earthquake, as the country's Olympians maintained their gold-reaping momentum with a vigorous fighting spirit at the Beijing Games.

    Tuesday witnessed an unstoppable team of Chinese male gymnasts storm to a long-coveted Olympic team gold medal, beating defending champion Japan by a comfortable margin of 7.25 points. Everyone in the team, which won a gold in Sydney 2000 but dropped to a humiliating fifth position four years later in Athens, burst into tears following their hard-earned victory. Full story
