CAIRO, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Cairo-based Arab League (AL) said the life is normal in Mauritania after a military coup ousted its president last week, the Egyptian MENA news agency reported Wednesday.

Everything is normal and the democratic experiment in the country is not endangered, Ahmed ben Helli, AL Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs, was quoted as saying.

On Aug. 6, the Mauritanian military staged a coup in the capital of Nouakchott, seizing President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi and Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed Waghf.

A high-level AL delegation led by ben Helli recently visited Mauritania for talks with Mauritanian political leaders in a bid to help resolve the crisis and preserve the democratic process in the country.

The Mauritanian people is keen on maintaining stability in the country and hope any disagreement should be settled through political dialogue, said ben Helli.

In a report presented to AL Secretary General Amr Moussa on Tuesday, ben Helli said all democratic institutions in Mauritania, except the presidential one, are operating effectively after the coup.

According to reports on Monday, the Mauritanian coup have released the prime minister and three officials, but the president is still detained.
