BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- World number four Nikolay Davydenko advanced comfortably to the second round of the men's singles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Ernests Gulbis from Latvia at the Olympic tennis event on Sunday.
Davydenko made a solid start, breaking Gulbis' serve in the fourth game of the opening set, although neither player was at their best.
Gulbis, who will turn 20 on Aug. 30, converted his only break point of the match when Davydenko served for the first set at 5-3 but then immediately dropped his serve as Davydenko took the set at 6-4.
"I didn't feel so well physically, I was pretty much dehydrated after the first set. I was feeling really bad with my stomach and I didn't have enough water. I haven't felt very well in the last few days," said the 38th-ranked Gulbis.
Davydenko found his range in the second set, most on serve, where he improved his first serve scoring percentage from less than 50 percent to more than 75 percent, while Gulbis continued to make errors.
"I think my serving was not very good today, from my feeling I think I can serve a lot better. If you don't feel physically well and things aren't working your way, that's what happens," said the Latvian, who finished the match with 49 unforced errors to 19 from Davydenko.
