BUENOS AIRES, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese community in Argentina celebrated on Friday the opening of the Beijing Olympic Games by watching the live broadcast of the Games together.
The viewers gathered in the China Town in Barrancas de Belgrano, north of Buenos Aires as the opening ceremony was broadcast through a gigantic screen set on the Arribenos street. The Argentine capital boasts a community of some 60,000 Chinese, most of whom are immigrants from Taiwan and Fujian province.
Attendants at the celebration included the city's Tourism Director Rodrigo Herrera Bravo, Chinese ambassador to Argentina Zeng Gang, and authorities from the Argentina-China Chamber of Commerce.
Loud applause rippled through the crowd as the Argentine and Chinese delegations paraded into Beijing's National Stadium known as the Bird's Nest.
Chinese living in Buenos Aires also held a temple fair to celebrate the Beijing Olympics with many shops opened to sell a big selection of typical Chinese products from food to traditional costumes, red carpets, lamps, among others.
Julio Werthein, president of the Argentina-China Chamber of Commerce, lauded the Chinese's contribution to the development of Argentina.
"The Chinese community does huge things for our country," he said.
The celebration, supported by the Tourism Office of Buenos Aires and other agencies, is aimed at deepening ties between the Argentines and the Chinese community beyond trade areas and promoting the cultural exchanges between the both nations.
