Nine killed, ten injured in U.S. car accident

     WASHINGTON, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed and 10 others injured as a car carrying suspected illegal immigrants flipped over in the U.S. state of Arizona on Thursday, local media reported.

    According to the ABC 15 channel, the sport utility vehicle with19 people on board crashed about 130 kilometers southeast of Phoenix in the morning.

    Citing Department of Public Safety officer Varmen Figueroa, the report said that the car drove through a wash, rolled over several times and landed on the roof, crushing it, with all the dead and injured trapped inside.

    All the victims were adults and most of them were male, it said.

    Officials said the other 10 injured passengers have been sent to hospitals, at least three of whom were said to be in critical condition.

    Figueroa told the TV that authorities were still trying to determine which one of the victims was the driver.

    Another official from U.S. immigration and Customs Enforcement told reporters that immigration agents suspected the car were transporting illegal immigrants when the accident occurred.
