Mauritania coup leaders say elections to be held as soon as possible

    DAKAR, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The coup leaders in Mauritania said Thursday that elections will be held in the country as soon as possible, reports from agencies reaching here said.

    The Mauritanian military staged a coup on Wednesday in the capital of Nouakchott, arresting President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi and Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed Waghf.

Agencies: Mauritanian military stages coup in capital

    DAKAR, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Mauritanian military staged a coup on Wednesday in the capital of Nouakchott, arresting President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi and Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed Waghf, reports from agencies reaching here said.

    The reports said the Mauritanian interior minister was also arrested by the military. Full story
