BANGKOK, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- The leader of Thailand's opposition Democrat Party said Saturday that a coup d'etat will not lead to good results in the country no matter who stages it, urging all sides to help prevent it from happening.
The Democrat leader, Abhisit Vejjajiva, was quoted by the Bangkok Post's web news as saying that the tendency to use violenceby some people could be the reason for a coup to take place, therefore, all sides should help prevent it.
Abhisit suggested the government to oversee the situation and show its sincerity by being the government for the people without any bias.
He said the government should not let violence erupt, such as the recent clash in Udon Thani province.
The Democrat leader said people will continue to talk about a coup, if the political situation ceases to improve.
On Saturday, 2,000 demonstrators from the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) held a rally at the Democracy Monument in Bangkok, demanding the government to step down and threatening to lay siege on Parliament if the government went ahead to rewrite the Constitution.
In 2006, the PAD organized more than a dozen of mass rallies across the country to press the then government of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Later that year, the military launched a coup and ousted Thaksin.
