Japanese IOC president: Beijing Olympics to show power of Asia

    TOKYO, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- "The Beijing Olympics is to exhibit the power of Asia to the world," Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda said in a recent interview with Xinhua.

    "The economy of Asia is fast developing, enhancing the continent's status in the world. It's a good timing to host an Olympic games in Asia," Takeda said.

    Takeda said the Beijing Olympics will demonstrate Asia's power through sports. He hoped that Japanese athletes broaden communications with all circles of the Chinese society to deepen the Japan-China friendship through sports and also strengthen exchanges with athletes from around Asia.

    Takeda has been to China for several times in the past 10 years, and he was deeply impressed by the huge changes brought to Beijing by the Olympics.

    "The air is cleaner, Olympic atmosphere could be felt along the road connecting the airport and the downtown, and the whole city is beautiful and enjoyable," he said.

    Takeda added that Japanese athletes are very satisfied with equipment and foods in the Olympic village, and feel comfortable to take part in games there.

    About the preparation for the games, Takeda lauded Beijing's completion of all venues on time. "Hardware is a test for the host, and from this perspective, the Beijing Olympics must be successful."

    Takeda believed that the games will bring deep influence to the Chinese society.

    "A successful Olympics will not only strengthen friendships between China and other countries, but also bring confidence to the Chinese people. The confidence may penetrate into all fields and help China achieve further development," he said.
