Special report: 2008 Olympic Games

PARIS, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- "Overseas Chinese always stand with their motherland. No matter where we are, we are all Beijingers. Let's give cheers for China and the Beijing Olympics," said Yang Yongju, president of France's leading Chinese-language newspaper Nouvelles d'Europe.

Yang told Xinhua in an interview on Friday that she keeps up with daily news of the Beijing Olympic Games, buys all newspapers that feature Olympic-related stories and also watches TV programs on the games.

"In 2008, China will finally realize its century-old dream of hosting the Olympic Games. Many Chinese people have contributed to the sporting event," she said.

"Overseas Chinese cherish the Olympics because we have witnessed the tremendous changes that have taken place in China and gained support and help from a stronger China," said Yang.

The Beijing Olympics is not just a sporting event, but also a platform to showcase China's economic and social development and its enhanced comprehensive strength, Yang said.

Therefore, efforts should be pooled to make the Beijing Olympics "the best, the most harmonious, the most united and the luckiest event," she said.

"The Olympic spirit and our national spirit also need to be passed on from generation to generation. We will build a stronger China," she said.

Nouvelles d'Europe has accorded special prominence to the Beijing Olympic Games in its coverage over the last few months, in a bid to help Chinese people in France gain more information about the Olympics.
