BEIING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Spanish synchronized swimming team came to Beijing with a strong medal target: two medals in the two events of the sport.
The swimmers, who arrived in Beijing on Thursday morning, started training at the Olympic aquatic venue Water Cube on Friday afternoon.
"It's the first day of training after a long trip and jet lag. They will be in better form as they settle in and train," said team coach Anna Tarres.
Spanish synchronized swimming has been on the rising momentum to join the challengers of the long time Olympic and world champion Russia. The team claimed the two golds at a qualification tournament in Beijing in April.
"In Beijing, we are looking for two medals in duet and team, between silver and golds, and the wish is golds," Tarres said.
She said few changes have been made to the routines since April, and they are working to improve synchronization, speed and execution.
"The sport has become more athletic. Sharp and quick swimmers really make the difference between a strong and a weak team," she said.
On Friday, the swimmers practiced a specially-designed group jump of the team free routine which Tarres said would be climax of the performance.
Unlike several teams who choose oriental music or performance to woo the audience, Tarres said no China elements have been added to their routines.
"We left that to the Chinese team, and they are the ones who deserve to have their music and moves, and we may never be as good as they do on that level," she said.
Tarres said she has not been following the progress of other teams, but was confident in her swimmers.
"We only saw China and Japan compete, and never saw the USA or Russia, but we know how we do, and what we need to do," she said.
