KABUL, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Canadian Foreign Minister David Emerson on Saturday said that his country would send additional troops to the post-Taliban Afghanistan to continue supporting the reconstruct process, fighting corruption and good governance there.

    "Canada has had 2,500 troops here in Afghanistan. It could expand to 2,700," he told a joint press conference along with his Afghan counterpart Rangin Dadfar Spanta.

    Earlier the two foreign ministers exchanged views on security situation in Afghanistan, war on terror and drug menace in the war-ravaged central Asian state.

    However, he did not say when the new 200 troops would be deployed to Afghanistan.

    This is the first visit of Emerson to Afghanistan since he was appointed the Canadian Foreign Minister in May this year.

    Emerson arrived at the Taliban former stronghold Kandahar, the unrest southern Afghanistan, and visited Canadian forces stationed there on Friday.

    Serving within the framework of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), the Canadian forces based in Kandahar have been tasked to stabilize security in the troubled southern province.

    Canada is also building a dam in Kandahar to improve the living condition of the war-weary people there.

    The Canadian top diplomat also expressed concern over the increasing activities of insurgents in the tribal areas of Pakistan, stressing that Canada likes to see Pakistan play a very important role in dealing with insurgency.
