CPLP vows to promote Portuguese at ministerial meeting

    LISBON, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The 13th meeting of the Ministers' Council of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) ended here Thursday with several resolutions aimed at promoting the Portuguese language around the world.

    The resolutions will be presented for ratification at the CPLP summit scheduled for Friday.

    Founded in 1996, the CPLP groups Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, and East Timor.

    The Ministers' Council meeting focused on ways to promote the Portuguese language, said Portugal's Foreign Minister Luis Amado at the end of Thursday's proceedings.

    The ministers agreed to approve Senegal's appeal to join Equatorial Guinea and Mauritius as observer countries of the CPLP.

    They also agreed to enhance cooperation in the fight against AIDS within the community.
